What is Matched Betting?

When you sign up to an Australian bookmaker, they give you free bonus bets as a deposit match (typically 50-100% of your deposit). These bonus bets can be converted into real, withdrawable cash using a simple mathematical technique.

What You Need to Start

💰

Starting Capital

$300-500 minimum. This covers your deposits and lay bet liability. More capital = more bookies at once.

🔄

Betfair Account

Essential. Betfair is Australia's only betting exchange. You need it to place "lay" bets (betting against outcomes).

Time

2-3 hours per week. Each bookie signup takes 15-30 mins. Work through them at your own pace.

1

Set Up Betfair

Your betting exchange for lay bets - takes 5 mins

Betfair is a betting exchange where punters bet against each other (not against a bookmaker). This lets you "lay" a bet - meaning you bet against something happening.

Quick Setup:

  1. 1.Go to betfair.com.au and click "Join Now"
  2. 2.Complete registration with your details (must match your ID)
  3. 3.Verify your identity (upload drivers license or passport)
  4. 4.Deposit funds using Visa/Mastercard ($10 minimum, instant)

Important: Betfair charges 5% commission on winning lay bets. This is factored into all our calculations.

2

Your First Bookie Signup

Deposit $200 → Get $100 bonus bet → Convert to ~$80 cash

The Process:

  1. 1.
    Sign up & deposit

Create account, deposit $200, receive $100 bonus bet

  2. 2.
    Check the bonus terms

Some require a "qualifying bet" first (covered below)

  3. 3.
    Convert the bonus bet

Use the calculator below to turn $100 bonus → $75-85 cash

  4. 4.
    Withdraw or keep betting

Your $200 deposit is still yours. Extract it or use for ongoing promos.

Note: Australian law prevents bookies from advertising signup bonuses publicly. You can only see the actual offers after creating an account. They still exist - they just can't promote them.

In VIC, SA, WA or NSW? Read this

These states are technically "excluded" from signup bonus offers due to advertising laws. But here's the secret: bookies usually give them anyway if you ask nicely.

If your bonus doesn't appear instantly after signing up:

  1. 1.
Call or live chat and ask: "When is my bonus bet going to appear in my account?"
  2. 2.
If they say it's not available in your state, act surprised: "Is there anything you can do on your side?"
  3. 3.
Last resort: "I only joined because I heard you had great offers and odds. Is there really nothing you can do for me?"

Pro tip: Be kind and calm. They almost always sort you out. If one person says no, try again another day - different staff may have different authority.

3

Converting the Bonus

Back at bookie, lay on Betfair → guaranteed profit

A bonus bet is "Stake Not Returned" (SNR) - if you win, you only get the profit, not your stake back. We convert it to cash by backing a selection at the bookie and laying the same selection on Betfair.

Example: $100 Bonus Bet

At bookie:

Back "Fast Horse" @ $7.00 with $100 bonus

At Betfair:

Lay "Fast Horse" @ $7.50

Outcomes:

If horse wins:+$80.67
If horse loses:+$80.67

Guaranteed profit: $80.67 (80.7% conversion)

Bonus Bet Calculator (SNR)

Enter your bonus bet details to calculate lay stake and guaranteed profit.

Tip: Higher odds with a small spread = better conversion rate. Aim for $6-$10 odds with under 5% spread. But remember: higher odds = more liability required in your Betfair account!

Lay Stake Required:$80.54
Liability (need in Betfair):$523.49
Guaranteed Profit:+$76.51 (76.5%)

IMPORTANT: You MUST have the liability amount (shown in orange above) available in your Betfair account BEFORE placing your lay bet. If you don't have enough, your lay bet won't be placed and you'll be left with an unhedged position!

🏇 Horses vs Sports - Which Should You Use?

Sports (Football, AFL, etc.)

  • Better for beginners - odds move slowly
  • • More time to place your lay bet
  • • Good for learning the process

Horse Racing

  • Often better odds/spreads
  • • Need to act fast - odds change quickly
  • • Best once you're confident
⚠️ The Correct Order: Back First, Then Lay
  1. 1.Place back bet at bookie first (more stable odds)
  2. 2.Immediately place lay bet on Betfair
  3. 3.CHECK it's MATCHED - look for green confirmation

Unmatched = exposed! Increase lay odds or try a different selection.

What To Do With Your Bonus Bets

Convert to cash OR use on +EV tips

Once you have a bonus bet, you have two options. The best choice depends on whether there's a good Punt Legacy tip available.

🏇

Use on Punt Legacy Tips

Place the bonus bet on a Punt Legacy tip with positive expected value (+EV).

Best when: $6+ odds tip available

Higher odds + edge = better expected return than converting

💵

Convert to Cash

Use the calculator above to hedge your bonus bet for guaranteed cash (~75-80% extraction).

Best when: No high-odds tip available

Guaranteed return with no variance

⚠️

The Big Risk: Getting Promo Banned

Here's the catch with matched betting: bookmakers don't like losing money. If they notice you're only betting on promos and always taking perfect odds, they'll promo ban you - restrict your account from future promotions.

How to Delay Getting Banned

The key is "mug betting" - making yourself look like a regular punter, not a matched bettor.

  • 1:1 ratio: For every promo bet, place one non-promo bet
  • Vary your stakes: Don't always bet exactly the promo amount
  • Bet on popular events: AFL, NRL, EPL, NBA, big race days
  • Don't always take best odds: Take "worse" odds sometimes
  • Leave money in accounts: Don't withdraw immediately after winning
  • Round your stakes: Bet $50 or $100, not $47.32
  • Use website, not app: Apps track more data about your betting patterns
  • Use mobile data: Avoid shared WiFi where possible

The Smart Solution: Mug Bets That Actually Profit

Traditional mug bets cost you money - you're expected to lose ~5% on them. But what if your mug bets actually made money?

Punt Legacy tips are the perfect mug bets. They're real bets on racing that:

  • Make you look like a normal racing punter to bookies
  • Actually have positive expected value (+EV)
  • Keep your accounts healthy for longer
  • Build your bankroll while protecting promo access

After Signups: Reload Bonuses

The ongoing income most people miss - $500-$1500/month

Most people think matched betting ends after signups. Wrong. Bookies constantly offer "reload bonuses" to get you betting again - and you can convert these too.

When Bookies Offer Reloads

  • You've been "losing" on their platform (from their view)
  • You've been inactive for a while
  • Big sporting events (AFL finals, Spring Carnival)
  • You ask them nicely

How to Ask for a Reload

Track which bookies you're "losing" on, then contact them:

"Hi, I deposited money a while ago and haven't had much luck. I'm thinking of depositing another $500 - is there any bonus you could offer me?"

Expected Ongoing Income

Keep your accounts active and you can expect $500-$1500/month in reload bonuses to convert. Some people receive $1000 reload offers from a single bookie!

Key tip: Don't withdraw everything immediately. Leave money in accounts and keep betting occasionally to look like a regular punter.
